I study how bacteria receive and integrate environmental signals. I am especially interested in the expression dynamics of stress response genes under different conditions of acute stress. Key questions I am interested in are:
-Does equilibrium behavior of stress response genes determine fitness in a given condition? Are other parameters such as the variance, response speed, or short-term dynamics also relevant?
-Do key regulators exhibit condition-dependent differences in their dynamics.
-Are there dynamic behaviors that are characteristic of stress responses?
In addition to studying stress response, I am implementing tools for multiplexing strains in our single-cell microfluidic devices. Development of this ability will greatly expand our ability to study the genetic basis of complex phenotypes at high-throughput.
